Supporting Healthy Habits for Little Smiles Across Inner Brisbane
We believe that good oral health starts with prevention. Our approach to preventative dental care focuses on early intervention, education, and building habits that last a lifetime. At Greenslopes Dental Studio, we provide a calm, welcoming space where children and families from Greenslopes and surrounding inner Brisbane suburbs can access age-appropriate dental support.
Whether it’s your child’s very first visit or a regular check-up, our team is here to guide you through every step with care and clarity.
When Should My Child First See the Dentist?
A common question we receive from many of our patients is: “When should I bring my child in for their first dental check-up?”
As dental professionals, we recommend that children have their first visit by the age of two—or earlier if teeth have already started coming through. These early visits allow us to monitor their dental development and identify any concerns early on. It also gives parents the opportunity to receive guidance on home care, diet, and oral hygiene routines.
Oral Education for Preventive Dental Care for Children
Early education is vital in helping children develop good oral hygiene habits—this is what we believe in to instill consciousness on children at a young age that looking after their teeth is also important. That’s why each appointment includes:
- Professional teeth cleaning (when appropriate for age)
- Dental development monitoring
- Interactive oral hygiene education
- Nutritional guidance to support healthy teeth
- Tips for parents on daily care and brushing routines
As we go the extra mile in providing a calm space for our patients, we also use kid-friendly language, encourage participation, and help children feel at ease so they grow up with a positive view of visiting the dentist.
Why Preventative Dental Care Matters
Preventative dental care is about more than just brushing teeth—it’s also about preventing problems before they begin. Regular visits to Greenslopes Dental Studio allow us to detect issues early and offer advice specific to your child’s age, habits, and needs. This is the main reason why we strongly suggest going to our dental professionals as early as possible to educate you about how to take care of your child’s teeth—and that includes routine visits, which can significantly reduce the likelihood of cavities, gum issues, and dental anxiety later in life.
Home Care Tips for Children’s Oral Health
For Babies
Once teeth begin to appear, they should be gently brushed once daily using a soft, child-sized toothbrush and water. No toothpaste is needed at this stage. A helpful technique is to lie your baby on your lap facing you or on a bed to gently brush each tooth with circular motions.
For Toddlers
From around 18 months, brushing should occur twice daily using a small amount of child-strength fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a pea). Encourage your child to try brushing first, then assist to ensure all areas are reached.
Introducing Floss
As soon as your child’s teeth start to touch, flossing becomes important. We recommend using floss gently each night to remove food particles and help prevent decay between the teeth.
By introducing these habits early, children develop a routine that supports long-term oral health well into adulthood.
